Automotive Rinseless – How It Works

Rinseless solution has been a staple cleaning solution for many car owners in recent years. It does not eliminate the usage of water to clean a car, but it is an effective solution (pun intended) that requires less usage of water to clean the car without scratching the paintwork.

But does a rinseless solution works? Let’s explore!

What is rinseless wash solution for?

A rinseless wash solution is an alternative cleaning approach for those who have limited access to water, or when faced with limitations to clean a lightly soiled car.

For example, high rise dwellers with lack space for a proper car wash, or a lack of direct water supply to clean a car. In some countries, during the draught season’s limitations, rinseless wash solution might be the only way to clean a car.

How does the science work behind the cleaning of rinseless wash?

Cleaning with rinseless wash solution is possible through 2 major occurrences.
Chemical reaction and agitation.

Chemical reaction is the process where foreign matters (contaminants) react with introduction of surfactant. A good cleaner will reduce surface tension of water, allowing it to penetrate, lift and suspend contaminants for easier removal.

Agitation helps in lifting dirt and contaminants from the surface for removal.

When cleaning with rinseless wash solution, both chemical reaction and agitation happen simultaneously. Upon contact, the solution reduces surface tension and lifts, disperses and suspends contaminant. The wash medium, whether it is a microfibre towel or a wash mitt, agitate and help lift contaminants and carry it away (transfer) onto the wash medium.

Is Rinseless Wash Safe?

When used in the correct settings and method, rinseless wash solution is absolutely safe.

Scratching or marring occurs when contaminants are not suspended in the solution and bigger particles are directly dragged on the paint or surface. To prevent this from happening, here are a few tips to ensure that cleaning is safer:

1) Usage of rinseless wash solution on lightly soiled cars.
Contaminants that are bigger and denser in particles ie: sand, seeds, or mini rocks of that matter, can’t be suspended in the solution. This will cause the particles to drag on the surface and cause scratches or marring.

2) Clean microfibre wash mitt or towel.
Microfibre wash mitts or towels are highly effective in trapping contaminants. Therefore, a clean microfibre surface ensures contaminants are trapped in the fibres and not dragged on paint. Rinsing the microfibre medium or usage of new microfibre medium is recommended.

3) Ample of rinseless wash solution soaked and released during washing.
The wash medium should be dripping wet and not damp when cleaning the surface. This helps for more surfactant to be introduced onto the surface, lifting and suspending dirt for removal.

At OSREN, we further introduce fluid-silicone surfactant that helps in strengthening the safety of rinseless wash and cures into a sacrificial layer of protection.

The fluid-silicone surfactant(FSS) double as lubrication and leaves behind a layer of gloss demonstrated below.

OSREN Luminous Rinseless Wash contains Fluid-Silicone Surfactant (FSS) that is 100% water soluble and contains zero VOC.
Upon agitation, FSS will lubricate and encapsulate surface dirt/contaminants for safer removal.
The remaining FSS that is present on the surface will begin curing and forms a polymerised layer of shine.
Once cured, FSS will produce a shine that also helps in thwarting dirt build-ups. Subsequent washes will also be made easier.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a rinseless wash?

Rinseless wash solution excels with it comes to cleaning lightly soiled cars.

When a car is heavily soiled or unwashed for weeks, where accumulated stains are more stubborn than usual, a conventional sudsy shampoo is recommended instead.

This is explained earlier that rinseless solution would not be able to lift and suspend denser particles effectively. A possible outcome is that when agitation is introduced, these larger particles will rub against the paint and cause marring.

OSREN’s Luminous Automotive Rinseless is also a friendlier approach to cleaning a car, as less water is required to wash a car. Fewer steps are required, therefore making the process less time-consuming.

Last but not least, its formulation does not harm our skin nor contribute to water pollution even if it gets into the water system.

What is the correct way of using rinseless wash solution?

Cleaning safely and effectively with rinseless wash solution will require the right method and
tools.
