What does polish really means? (In the context of Auto Detailing)<\/p>\n

Ever gotten confused with all those detailing jargons? Well, we will try to shed some lights in this post.<\/p>\n

Firstly, the definition:
\nPol-ish<\/strong> (verb)<\/em>
\nTo make smooth and glossy, especially by rubbing or friction.<\/p>\n

But in auto detailing context, I\u2019ll say polish is actually one of the steps used during \u2018Surface Preparation\u2019<\/strong> (the act of \u201cdoing\u201d up the paint surface so that it is free from defects and ready to proceed with wax, sealant or coating).<\/p>\n

There are mainly 4 steps for Surface Preparation<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Compound<\/li>\n
  2. Polish<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. Glaze<\/li>\n
  4. Paint Cleaning (not to be mistaken for car washing\/cleaning with shampoos or degreasers)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    So what are the differences of the steps? Here\u2019s the explanation in layman terms:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Compound<\/strong>
      \n– \u201cpolishing\u201d using tools & polish (product)<\/em> with heavy<\/strong> cutting power<\/li>\n
    2. Polish<\/strong>
      \n– \u201cpolishing\u201d using tools & polish (product)<\/em> with moderate<\/strong> cutting power<\/li>\n
    3. Glaze<\/strong>
      \n– \u201cpolishing\u201d using tools & polish (product)<\/em> with light<\/strong> cutting power<\/li>\n
    4. Paint Cleaning<\/strong>
      \n– \u201cpolishing\u201d using tools & polish (product)<\/em> with ultralight<\/strong> cutting power, which contains silicone and\/or wax
      \n(When we talk about cleaning the CAR or washing the CAR, yes, it means using car shampoo. However when we talk about cleaning the PAINT in particular, it means removing stubborn\/embedded dirt, grime and light oxidations, in which normally washing can\u2019t do much to these defects.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \nWhy do we need so many types of polish<\/strong> (products)<\/em> with different \u201ccutting\u201d power? Well in our terms, cutting means abrading the clear coat to reveal a fresh defect-less surface. Meaning to say that, if you have watermarks, scratches, swirl marks, oxidation, blemishes and other defects on the paintwork\u2019s clear coat, you\u2019ll have to abrade them away to reveal a new, flawless clear coat.<\/p>\n

      Generally a polish<\/strong> (product)<\/em> with high cutting power will produce a lower gloss finishing while a polish with lower cutting power will produce a higher gloss finishing:<\/p>\n

      High Cutting<\/strong> ===> Low Gloss<\/strong><\/em>
      \n Low Cutting<\/strong> ===> High Gloss<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

      So if I have heavy defects on my car\u2019s paintwork, I would need a high cutting polish to abrade them away but it\u2019ll leave behind a low gloss and some swirls (Swirls are scratches caused by compounding or polishing)<\/p>\n

      High Cutting<\/strong> ===> More Swirls<\/strong><\/em>
      \n Low Cutting<\/strong> ===> Less Swirls<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

      Swirls created from compounding<\/p><\/div>\n

      Which also means:
      \nHigh Cutting<\/strong> ===> More Swirls<\/strong> ===> Low Gloss<\/strong><\/em>
      \n Low Cutting<\/strong> ===> Less Swirls<\/strong> ===> High Gloss<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

      Back to our problem, let\u2019s say if I\u2019ve got many defects on my paintwork, how do I deal with it?<\/p>\n

      So in theory,<\/p>\n

      Step 1: Use a Compound<\/strong> (Product)<\/em>
      \nResults from step 1: removable defects will be removed and swirls will be created.<\/p>\n

      Step 2: Use a Polish<\/strong> (Product)<\/em>
      \nResults from step 2: Swirls will be removed and light Swirls\/Holograms will be created.<\/p>\n

      Step 3: Use a Glaze<\/strong> (Product)<\/em>
      \nResults from step 3: Swirls\/Holograms will be removed and a flawless finish will be produced!
      \n(In theory! However when talking about craftsmanship, there\u2019s no such thing as 100%, 99.9% is just as good!)<\/em><\/p>\n

      *Of course if the initial defect is not severe, probably just some light defects, I\u2019ll just start with step 2 and then step 3 to get my 99.9% finish.<\/em><\/p>\n

      However with modern chemical engineering from our guys at the lab, we\u2019re always determined to shorten the entire surface preparation process by creating products with the highest cutting power whilst producing the highest gloss.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
